Who We Are
Zak Kerhoulas
Zak Kerhoulas is a sound designer, developer, and artist. His work is typically supported by technology and investigates the significance of human tangibility in the digital age. At the University of Michigan, Zak earned bachelor’s degrees in both Computer Science and Performing Arts Technology. During his time there he conducted research on embodied musical expression, developing interfaces for performance ranging from a breath-extended harpsichord to a completely tactile audio editor. He has also worked extensively as a sound designer for live theatre, most notably on a series of devised pieces with collaborator Tiara Partsch. Alongside her, Zak is a founding member of Flying the Machine. He is currently based in Chicago, IL.
Tiara Partsch
Born and raised in Luxembourg, Tiara is a writer and a stage director. Specializing in the creation of devised pieces, she focuses primarily on new works and physical theater practices. After graduating from the University of Michigan with a Directing BFA in Theatre Performance, Tiara chose to pursue a Writing MFA in Nonfiction at Sarah Lawrence College, where she is currently completing her second year. She was the local Ann Arbor parade director for the Little Amal Project in September 2023 and translated, devised and directed the show People are Things (Based off of Nina Bouraoui’s writings). She is a member of New Circle Theater Company. She considers her collaboration with Zak to be integral to her creative practice and is thrilled to see where Flying the Machine might lead them. She is currently based in New York.
